Tetsuo Akiyama is a visiting Professor at Hokusei University. He graduated from Meisei University in 1974, and earned his PhD from Tokyo University in 1991.
Dr. Akiyama worked at Tokyo Metropolitan University for 35 years as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Technology, and later as a Professor for the Faculty of Urban Environment, Department of Architecture and Urban Science and the Department of Natural and Cultural Tourism.
Dr. Akiyama received the Civil Engineering Design Award for the universal design of the Numazu station square and the Transportation Book Award Category of Economics and Administration for "Support of Living Public Transportation: 2009 Gakugei Syuppan."
Among many of his public services, Dr. Akiyama was a member of the Transport Research Board, Committee of Accessibility.
