Pat Cox began his working life as a lecturer in Economics with the Irish Institute of Public Administration before joining the staff of RTÉ, Ireland's National Television and Radio Broadcaster, as a current affairs broadcaster. Elected in the European elections for Munster in June 1994 and later President of his political group, the European Liberal Democrats (ELDR), he became President of the European Parliament in January 2002. He retired from active politics in 2004 and currently serves as member of the Supervisory Board of Michelin and the European Advisory Council of Microsoft. He is also the EU Coordinator for the Trans-European Transport Network Priority Project No 1, a high-capacity rail link from Berlin to Palermo.
